Jabber is an online open distributed presence network, that is, it lets you communicate with others just like ICQ or MSN, but it's a lot more powerful and it does not rely on anyone but the Internet itself. To get connected, you need an XMPP-compliant client like Gaim (Windows, Unix, whatever), Gossip (GNOME) or any of those others mentioned on the Jabber.org Clients Page.
